Australia on Wednesday asked Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavari not to sign a controversial security agreement with China.

A leaked draft of the security agreement sent shockwaves around the region last month — particularly measures that would allow Chinese security and naval forces to be deployed to the Solomon Islands.

This has put pressure on long-standing concerns in the United States and its allies about the possibility of China building a naval base in the South Pacific, which would allow Beijing to project its naval power beyond its borders.
