Defense News: Document reveals a backlog of $14 billion in US defense transfers to Taiwan
WASHINGTON – Acquisition issues related to the pandemic have delayed the United States in the delivery of $14.2 billion in military equipment to Taiwan that the island has purchased since 2019.
With much of Washington’s attention focused on how to rapidly deploy a steady stream of military aid to Ukraine, some lawmakers are concerned that Taiwan’s delay undermines its ability to deter a potential Chinese invasion. Representative Steve Chabot, the top Republican member of the House Asia Pacific Committee, told Defense News that the Foreign Affairs Committee held a meeting to discuss the backlog last week.
